Ideals and actions

Browsing through channels I stumbled across Lok Sabha TV. Being a government channel, rarely it is able to capture the audience while browsing, but that day it managed to grab my attention.

There was a granny; telling story to a child (in some South Indian language, alien to me, but the picturization of scene of so beautiful, that I stopped browsing and started to watch it; of course there were English sub titles..)
It was a story that we all have heard many times...Pandavas' and Kauravas' in Mahabharat....

Pandavas' - The good people.. Fighting the battle.. Maha Bharat for 'धर्मं'.....
Kauravas' - The evil people.... Fighting the battle for Kingdom, Money i.e. mortal causes....

We all know the story... but Granny had an addition which I never heard...

After death -
All Pandavas' went to hell... and Yudhishthira..The epitome of 'धर्मं'.. The well known धर्मराज... was given harshest of punishments.....
And surprisingly, all Kauravas' went to heaven..

Now this was completely opposite of conventional stories that I have heard so far...I couldn't understand why is Granny saying this; so was the child listening the story...and asked flurry of questions to Granny, and best point is that even I had same questions.. (This is best part of Direction, kudos to the Director of Tele film for this, he was able to connect to a person who did not understand his language)

Then comes Granny's answer...

Kauravs' always "SAID" that their goal was "Kingdom, Money" and they fought for it and lost life fighting for their ideals..i.e. no difference in कथनी और करनी
Pandavas' always "SAID" that they were following 'धर्मं', their ideals was always on the "Moral" side..
But objectively speaking, their behaviour was not completely according to 'धर्मं'..
Fighting for the lost kingdom is a mere mortal behaviour...i.e. there is clear difference "Ideals" and "Actions".... which lead them to hell..

(I know that I am too small of a person with very little understanding of things to comment anything on 'धर्मं', and I'll not try to comment whether behaviour of Pandavas' was according to 'धर्मं')

But for me - I got the message - Difference in Ideals and Actions - It really doesn't matter what are my ideals unless I stand by them; if my actions are not according to my ideals then there is no point in having ideals. What do you think?

I'm the lucky one..

It's the time to appreciate some things that came to me by default...and never realised...

Recently I switched the company; so got chance to meet new people; compared to earlier company, this one is more cosmo-politan.

I met people from almost every state of India here.. (except couple of states from North East)

Most of them had a common story.. born in some place.. studied at some other place.. and now living in Pune for job.. and everyone. yes everyone.. told me that .. I'm the lucky one... born here...studied here...and working here.. always with family...

Never thoght about this... Being always at Home..never appreciated the fact... but realising it now.. Yes, in fact.. I'm the lucky one...

We, The Indians; India, Our country, not mine, not yours and not theirs, it is OUR COUNTRY

In our school days, we used to take pledge every day -
"India is my country and all Indians are my brothers and sisters. I love my country…."

It's a long time when I left the school and I hardly remember it.

Am I following the pledge?
Only "Idiots" will ask this question and "Idiots" will answer it. So let us not even ask it, so answering is automatically kept aside.

"India is no longer left a country to sacrifice something for"

These are extracts from some blogs that I read recently.
Are these statements correct?
I don't know. I don't want to find out whether these are correct or not.
And even if I ever want to find out answers of these, I admit (with all due respect to everyone, actors of the state, and writers of these statements)– what should I do with these correct statements or wrong statements? Do I know the remedy? I might know… do I have power/ authority to fix it? Is it possible to completely eradicate the devils which resides in "us"?

So, in short, the questions are unending. I am leaving them aside.

Some days back, when I read these statements, I was confused, What should be the reaction? Anger, pity or total agreement……!!!

It was a reaction, without any application of thought, conscience. Now, after a little thought, I am very happy with these statements.

These are clear indicators of awareness amongst us. If people are reading it and they are replying to these, it means, yes, there are people who are thinking about country, they are ready to spend some time of their busy schedules on this very important subject. And I thank all of you of raising the concern.

This subject will always lure creative minds, have a look at movies that depict shows common mans anger. A character says, "लोगों में घुस्सा बहोत है, उसे आजमाना बंद करो!!".
Kudos to the writer of this of catching the nerve of people in very correct words.

We will always have writers and film makers who will raise these concerns. (Or as some says, they will cash on popular subjects, knowing its guaranteed hit!!!)

OK fine.

We should thank all of them, but what next, don't we need to stand up and resolve the problem. This reminds me of sentence from management book, "Problems have a way of hanging around and growing larger if ignored". How we want to see ourselves? As passive, inactive, cribbing person? Or as proactive, reliable and with "Let's do it" attitude. The answer is with us.

Now, let us get little bit realistic and try to solve problem.

Being in software industry, I will use our parlance.

Everyone of us is able to find existing problems – Corruption,

Unemployment, Illiteracy, Nexus between politics and bureaucracy, terrorism, increasing crime, population….

The list is never ending.

Can I say that, we have identified the 'Problem Statement'? Yes, I can.

Is the scope very wide? Yes, it is.

What do I do, when my customer gives me unrealistic demands, I strip them down to a extent which is possible for us to deliver.

So can I strip our 'Problem Statement'? Yes, I can.

What should be followed up and what should not be? Let us take it one by one -

Corruption  - Do I have authority/ power to check on corruption? (In ideal case, everyone has authority as a citizen, but in ideal case, aren't we suppose to ensure zero critical bugs in releases? We are, right, so why do we have production supports? So, let us stick to real life scenario and not get too much idealistic)

Unemployment, terrorism, increasing crime and so on and so forth, it is not easy to find feasible way of 'Contributing to Solution'.

As we do in our work life, I am here trying to find out 'Commonly agreed most feasible solution'.

Illiteracy – Can something be done here, I think, yes. But, how?

Can we support Persistent Foundations effort -  Student Sponsorship Program?

Can this be a start-up towards achieving bigger goals?

Can we "Proactively" spend some time in making sure that the children are not dropping from school after they are being sponsored for a year or so?

Yes.

This can be first step.
This can be our first 'Module', The First 'Milestone'.

Let me go back to the 'Problem Statement' again. It is very huge responsibility, isn't it, if so, we need support from everyone to get it done. Right? (Do you remember management keywords, team efforts,
collective responsibility.) I think we apply these jargons only in our professional life and keep them locked in safe when it comes to social life.
If I am cribbing about the way, we are governed in this country, then, it is high time for me to 'Improve my performance in social life also'. There are no 'Performance Improvement Programs (PIPs)' here.

I leave this the discussion here, and will wait for second milestone to be discovered by the team.

Do I really need it?

Do I really need it? I don’t know. (Or rather I know but I am not ready to admit it!!!)

Recently I was watching a movie named Confessions of shopoholic. The movie is a about a girl who is addict to buying anything that she could see in the stores. The movie, as the name suggests, is about her addiction buying unnecessary things. A friend of our heroine sends her to some clinic where experts try to help addict people. The counsellor asks a question to all people “Do you really need it?” and then asks everyone to repeat the question – Do I really need it? Do I really need it? Do I really need it? And it goes on and on.. I don’t know what happens next in the movie as I left it there and moved on to another channel.

After few days this question suddenly came to mind, Do I really need this? And although I am not shopoholic, I was left contemplating about the question for lot of time, and hence here I am writing about this.

I think I am not a potato couch, but very often I have found myself browsing channels just for the sake of it. When I reach home from office, I don’t want to do anything, absolutely anything, so I choose to switch on the TV. And I end up flipping through channels at a rate one channel per ten seconds. Do I really need it? Don’t I know the answer of this question? I know, but I am not ready to admit it.
This flipping continues till I find something worth(?) watching. And it is even more intersting to know what is that worthy channel that I am selecting. Most of the times, it is the movie which I have seen already. If I start counting, I will definitely find that there are many movies which I have seen more than ten times and I know each and every dialog, each and every frame. Is this activity called as entertainment? I know its not, but I don’t have the courage to admit it. Recently, I saw a movie named Condenmed on Star Movies. By the time the movie finished, I was cursing myself, why the hell I am watching this. And this is not the first time it happened to me, I have watched most insane movies like Anjaam, Singh is King. And this not only happens with movies, it continues with news also. I always think that I should be aware of whats happening around me. So what do I watch at news? Take yesterdays example, I was watching a debate over Sania Mirza – Shoiab Malik marriage. So called socialists were analyzing the issue(?) with so much of sincerity, there was also a psychologist who was analyzing behaviour of Shoaib Malik in press conference. And everyone will be amazed to know his deductions. They were able to deduct that Shoaib Malik was hiding something, this dedcution was based on the evidence – which was – Shoaib scratching his head, he being not ready to look into the camera….. and the argument goes on. Do I really need to watch this? I was able to answer the question this time, I immediately swiched off the TV.

My tryst with this question continues to many things that I do in my day. Take the example of browsing, which I know most of us are very fond of. What do I browse, first I go on Orkut, check all the scraps. Oops while writing this, I am stunned to type in the word SCRAP. Doesn’t it mean an old, discarded, or rejected item or substance? (courtsey : Dictionary.com) I think, the term is very correctly coined by Google engineers. Next I check my friend list on Orkut and on FaceBook. Then I find out how many on Orkut friend list are not on FaceBook friend list and vice-versa. Then I start sending requests to all of them!!! Waw, what a important task, isn’t it? Do I really need it? I think,no, I don’t need it. I can very well connect to all my loved once with one of these J. But I don’t know where to stop. I think, I am using computer, but it’s the other way round, the computer is using me.

Let me just traverse back in time and find out what I was doing without these exciting(?) gadgets – TV and computer. It was my eleventh standard. We had bought new house and shifted to new place. The place was then on outskitrts of city, our society was in secluded area. So there was no cable provider!!! (And Tata Sky wasn’t even born!!) I think, this is the year when I watched least amount of TV. Generally, people prepare for IITs and similar stuff, but I wasn’t doing anything of that sort. So I had ample time. I remember, I used to see Sun rising every day in the morning, this continued for the complete year, I even saw movement in the place where Sun rises on the horizon. It moved from one conrner of the east to other during the year. We had lots of rose plants in our balcony, red, yellow, white, pink, and the one which had two colours, pink and white. I used to water them all. It was the most a pleasant experience to see plants bud. Radio Mirchi was newly introduced in the Pune city. Saathiya was a chartbuster then,I remember myself waiting for Saathiya title track to be aired on the top 20 list. If I want to sum up everything in one sentence, it was the best time. Then slowly the place became crowded, cable providers came. Now I had TV remote, computer to play with. And by the time I reached second year of my engineering, all the rose plants died because I had no time to look at them. Currently, I don’t have any plant in my house.

Anyway, I know I have diverted the topic from where it started. So coming back again.

This list of places where I can ask the question “Do I need it?” can grow forever, I believe we all will have some or the other addiction like this. And of course no-one will admit it. And hence I’ve started loving this question – “Do I really need it?” More often I ask it to myself, more time I will get to the things that I love doing most.
